The Lexus LFA is powered by a 72° 4.8-liter V10 engine equipped with dual VVT-i carrying the 1LR-GUE designation with a maximum output of 560 PS (412 kW) delivered at 8,700 rpm. Its maximum torque output of 354 lb·ft (480 N·m) arrives at 6,800 rpm, 90 percent of which is available from 3,700 rpm. The engine redlines at 9,000 rpm, but with a fuel cutoff set at 9,500 rpm.

Two separate ducts route intake noise into the firewall from the intake manifold, allowing two different octaves of engine music to penetrate the passenger compartment. As a result, the LFA's engine note dominates the driving experience. Developed in conjunction with Yamaha's musical instrument division, engineers tuned the LFA's engine note the same way sound is tuned in an ovation guitar. Over the past decade we have pushed every boundary in pursuit of this goal and i believe we have created the most driver-orientated car we possibly could. Keeping the car's weight to an absolute minimum was one of the defining elements in the development of the Lexus LFA and this led to the decision to switch from using aluminum for the car's construction to advanced carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for the chassis and bodywork. Moreover, Lexus decided the CFRP structure should be built in-house rather than by a third-party supplier. In doing so, it drew on Toyota motor corporation's heritage in textile weaving technology to push the boundaries of its technical abilities, developing new carbon fiber looms and a laser system for monitoring the integrity of the material.

Power will be routed strictly to the rear wheels, and carbon-ceramic brakes ensure the car's ability to stop on a dime. The Lexus LF line is a series of concept cars built by Lexus, the luxury vehicle division of Toyota Motor Corporation. The "LF" line utilizes L-finesse, a specific design direction by Lexus. The design language of L-finesse was first introduced on the LF Series concepts and has now extended to all new vehicles in the Lexus lineup. The LF Series vehicles include three coupes/convertibles: the LF-A, the LF-A Roadster, and the LF-C; two sedans: the LF-S and LF-Sh; and two crossover SUVs: the LF-X and LF-Xh. These vehicles feature new design cues which derive from the L-finesse philosophy of "Intriguing Elegance" (純), "Incisive Simplicity" (妙), and "Seamless Anticipation" (予). New vehicle technologies include advanced instrumentation, multiple driver-selected vehicle configurations, hybrid and experimental powertrains, and unconventional driver interface designs. The first concept vehicle of the LF Series, the LF-X, appeared in 2003. Several of the LF concept vehicles have appeared close to their production counterparts, while the design cues of other LF concepts appeared on more distinctly different production vehicles.

2009 Lexus IS Car Pictures

The IS 250's 2.5-litre V6 develops 204 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, and is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Think about it: there is no other Toyota or Lexus model sold in North America that offers this engine, and only the FJ Cruiser and Tacoma are available with 6 speeds in their manual gearbox. The term 'badge engineering' doesn't apply here.

The IS is arguably the sportiest car in Lexus' line-up, but it doesn't turn its back on ride quality. The car is sure-footed and confident, and its linear steering entices you to take curves a little faster, a little sharper. At 100 km/h, the small V6 is spinning at 2,600 rpm, but the cabin is pretty quiet nonetheless.

However, driving the IS 350 may be something of a letdown from the dyed-in-the-wool enthusiast's perspective. The 3.5-liter V6 is unquestionably a highlight, providing smooth yet thrilling acceleration at the drop of your right foot. Unfortunately, the only available transmission is an automatic, and it's a slow-shifting one at that. Moreover, while the IS 350's steering is accurate, it's notably uncommunicative. Handling limits are quite high, but the brake pedal doesn't inspire confidence with its long travel and soft feel. On the whole, it seems that Lexus was aiming for a slightly less sporty demographic with this car, namely buyers who want the aesthetics and track numbers of a sport sedan along with the compliant ride and coddling interior of a luxury sedan.

The sole transmission choice is a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. The IS 350 accelerates with the tenacity of a dedicated sports car, as the 0-60 sprint requires just 5.6 seconds. Although the transmission offers quick manual-style gearchanges, it doesn't match revs on downshifts like some rival automatics do.
